I WOKE TO A SOFT BUZZING. I was confused until I realized it was Jack. He claimed he didn’t snore, but there were times, mostly when we’d been active on a case, when he couldn’t help himself.

I rolled to study his face. He looked like a male model sometimes, a comparison he hated when I pointed it out. He had a well-defined face and his hair was silky soft. In the morning, he always had a light pattern of stubble on his cheeks and chin. It made him even more attractive, which I was convinced should be outlawed.

“You don’t need to stare,” Jack murmured, his eyes remaining closed. “You can look at me whenever you want. There’s no reason to get so intense about it.”

I made a face. “How did you know I was staring?”

He opened his eyes and greeted me with a sleepy smile. “I just feel it sometimes.”

“Maybe you’re the magical one.”

“No, you’re definitely the magical one.” He slipped his arm under my waist and tugged me close. “You can sleep for another twenty minutes. We don’t have to be at the asylum until ten o’clock.”

“I’m done sleeping. You can have the twenty minutes, though.”

“I’m awake now.” He rubbed his nose against mine and gave me a soft kiss. “Once I’m up, I’m up.”

He wouldn’t even nap most days. He would occasionally lay down with me on a rainy weekend day when we weren’t on a case and drift off. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

“You didn’t wake me.”

“You could’ve had twenty more minutes.”

“I would rather spend time with you.” His voice was husky as he trailed his fingers up and down my spine. “Did you dream?”

I tried to remain loose in his arms. “Seriously, are you a mind reader?”

He smiled. “You only wake up before me if you dream. Otherwise, I pretty much have to tickle you awake.”

“That’s never happened.”

“Not lately,” he agreed. “You have heavy dreams these days. Before you found Casey and your mother, I tickled you awake several times a week. It was fun.”

That was a gross exaggeration. “I don’t think you ever tickled me awake.”

“Well, don’t wake up before me one day next week and we’ll test it.” He gave me another kiss. “Tell me what you dreamed about.”

It didn’t take long to lay things out. When I finished, he was thoughtful.

“Do you think this woman was right? Do you think the doctors were experimenting on the patients?”

“Yes, but I don’t know that they believe it was experimenting. Maybe they thought they were somehow going to help. Can we find out if these people were real?”

“Which people?”

“Sybil. Dr. Warner. Miranda. Jackie Granderson.”

“Figuring out if they were real or not should be relatively easy. Er, well, not necessarily Miranda. We don’t have a last name on her. The others should be easy enough. May I ask why this is important?”

“I want to know if the dreams are real.”

“They’re real.” He said it with such conviction I was taken aback.

“How can you be certain?”

“Because it’s you.”

“But .
